How do I know they are ancestral?

They are recorded as parents of Jeremiah RAWLING on his birth certificate (GRO births Sep Q 1847 RAWLING Jeremiah, Cockermouth XXV 85) and in the 1851 census (HO 107/2434 f273)

Who were their parents?

Jonathan was the son of Jeremiah and Ann RAWLING and Jane the daughter of Thomas and Bridget PEARSON, as recorded in the Lamplugh and Gosforth parish registers, respectively. The parish register entries match up with census listings and their gravestone in Ennerdale churchyard, which give Jonathan and Jane's ages and therefore birth dates, and link them to their children.

Biographical evidence

Pre-family life

I suppose Jonathan would have lived on the family farm at Hollins in Lamplugh until he got married. I suppose likewise Jane would also have lived with her parents - initially I think in Gosforth where she was born, perhaps later in Ennerdale where they had settled by 1851.

Family life

Jonathan and Jane probably married in the mid 1820s but I haven't found the record of it yet. Jonathan had two older brothers (William RAWLING and John Jackson RAWLING), so did not expect to take over the family farm; he and Jane made their home elsewhere. Their earlier children were born in Ennerdale (a chapelry of St Bees Parish with its village and chapel close to Hollins, which lies in the valley of Ennerdale), and this may mean they lived there up to about 1830 or so, ***or it may reflect Jane staying with her own family for her early confinements.

The children were:
Ann about 1828, Ennerdale
Thomas about 1830, Ennerdale
Bridget about 1836, Loweswater
Jane 1840, Loweswater
Mary about 1845, Loweswater
Jeremiah 1847, Loweswater

From 1836 at the latest (by their children's birthplaces and in the census), they lived at a place, just a farm or a couple of houses, called Godferhead, in the parish of Loweswater (several miles away, in the next valley to the north).
In 1841 the couple are there with their children down to Jane (the oldest, Ann, being 12), and three workers - a man of 30, a boy of 14 and a girl of 15.
In 1851 the whole family is there, children aged 3 to 22, with two young men working as farm servants; Jonathan's occupation says he's farmer of 160 acres
In 1861 only children Bridget to Jeremiah are still at home, aged 25 down to 13. Bridget gives an occupation, dress maker. Jeremiah gives Scholar. The acreage farmed looks like 150 over-written 160 - a flat top and a closed bottom loop on the middle digit. This return specifies that Jonathan employs two servants - they are again farm lads, living with the family.

Some time between 1861 and 1871 they moved back to the Rawling family farm at Hollins. This is probably linked to the death of Jonathan's brother William in 1865; William had no surviving children, and Jonathan looks to have been the next male of the family in line to take over the main family farm (the middle brother, John Jackson RAWLING, had also died, in 1837).
In 1871 they are in the census there, with Jane, Mary and Jeremiah, aged between 23 and 30. Jonathan is now a farmer of just 70 acres and they do not appear to be employing workers.

Later life

Jane died in 1874. By 1881 Jonathan had retired and in the census Jeremiah is listed as head of the household, still at Hollins. Jonathan himself died just short of the next census in 1891.

Legacy

What became of the children?

I have some information about the later life of some of the children:
Ann married Henry WILLIAMSON in 1854 in St Bees, and died in 1887. She and two of her sisters are commemorated on her parents' gravestone in Ennerdale churchyard.
Thomas married Ann BELL in 1859 in St Bees.
Bridget married a JACKSON, possibly Jonathan in 1863 in St Bees, and died in 1911. She and two of her sisters are commemorated on her parents' gravestone in Ennerdale churchyard.
Mary married a JACKSON and died in 1920.
Jeremiah has his own page.
