Rawling research notes

Also known as Rawlings, Rawlin, Rowlin, Rowling just in the 18th and 19th centuries - it gets even more confusing before that.

A lot of this is somewhat speculative reconstruction by linking together births, deaths and marriages in the parish register. I've got a page setting that out here. For the remainder of this page I'll just mention that a family link is inferred from the parish register and say no more about it.

See also the main RAWLING surname line page.

3. Jackson (1878-1959) and Catherine Ann (1877-1954) of Mosser.

Jackson and Catherine are known ancestors by the oral testimony of relatives who knew them when they were alive, which ties in with their GRO certificates (births, marriage, deaths; birth and marriage of a child) and the other evidence I have. The details on the line page are mainly from the various GRO certificates.

4. Jeremiah (1847-1939) and Margaret (1852-1947) of Hollins.

Jackson's birth certificate shows that Jeremiah and Margaret were his parents; his marriage and the censuses support it. Again I have their main details from GRO certificates - marriage and deaths. They have a memorial stone in Ennerdale churchyard which gives their ages at death and dates, along with their eldest son Jonathan. I have them in the 1881 and 1901 censuses, which give their children. Jeremiah is mentioned in Bulmer's directory for Cumberland, 1901. Other evidence for the children's details includes memorial inscriptions and family testimony.

5. Jonathan (abt 1802-1891) and Jane (abt 1803-1874) of Godferhead at Loweswater.

Jonathan and Jane are recorded as the parents of Jeremiah in his birth and marriage certificates, and the 1851 and 81 censuses. I don't have their marriage record but they are husband and wife, with Jane's maiden name, on Jeremiah's birth certificate and in the will of Isaac HARTLEY. They are husband and wife in the censuses and on their gravestone too, which also gives details of three of their daughters, including married names which has led me on the IGI to the possible marriages. Other children's details from census.

6. Jeremiah (abt 1770 - at least 1851) and Anne of Hollins.

Jeremiah and Anne of Hollins are listed as Jonathan's parents at his baptism. I have a page on RAWLINGs in the Lamplugh parish register which indicates how far and why I am confident in my reconstructions from that. I'm confident that this is Jonathan's baptism because it fits with his ages as given in censuses and on his gravestone. The PR is also my source for Jeremiah and Anne's marriage and my speculating that Ann was a JACKSON. And it gives the baptisms of their other children. My information on Jeremiah in 1837 is from the tithe apportionment, posted by the truly admirable Chris Dickinson on rumbutter.info. My information on the eldest son William and his family is from their memorial in Lamplugh.

7. William (b abt 1733) and Mary of Hollins.

William and Mary are recorded as Jeremiah's parents at his baptism. The PR is also the source for all the info on their daughters. And indeed all the other information on this family such as residence and occupations. Should look up a historical reference for what yeoman means in this context. Also see if I can find any source for what 'hw' means.

See the PR page for the odd marriage-christening clusters in the PR. I'm assuming the children in question were born out of wedlock, but I wonder if they might have been married as nonconformists. Look in RG6 for any RAWLING hits in 18th C in this area. Or TYSON or ROBERTSON

8. Jonathan (d 1763) and Elizabeth (d 1761) of Hows and later Hollins.

Again, all of my evidence for this whole family is the PR. I've built quite a lot of interpretation around the PR entries, so I discuss this family a fair bit there.

9. Jeremiah (d 1762) and Martha (d 1755) of Hollins.

This family is likewise partly in the Lamplugh PR. John is only there as a burial, but he is described as son of Jeremy RAWLING, and there's no other known person of that name in the parish. Then there's a daughter Jane in the Ennerdale PR and the parents' marriage is in Cockermouth PR (so I hear from Chris Dickinson in both cases).

Also, the baptism of my ancestor Jonathan is not in any PR we have found yet - the evidence for his parentage is more circumstantial. Chris Dickinson is keen on the significance of the name Martha, given to Jonathan's grand-daughter (via Jonathan's daughter Martha and John GUEST) in 1756, just after the death in 1755 of Martha the wife of Jeremiah - ie the baby's great-grandmother. I don't totally see how that is quite so significant, especially since it is the mother's name too, but I do generally give weight to Chris's opinions. For me the clincher is that William RAWLING of Hollins, my ancestor and Jonathan's son, is the only plausible candidate to be the William Rawling of Hollins, nephew of Joshua Rawling the cow doctor, thanked in the editor's preface to Joshua's cow doctor book for making the manuscript available for posthumous publication. If he's Joshua's nephew and shares the surname, then Jonathan his father pretty much has to be Joshua's brother. And Joshua is a certain son of Jeremiah, so Jonathan must be too.

Talking of Joshua, his gravestone still (I saw it in 2006) stands in Lamplugh churchyard, and it reads:
In Memory of Joshua Rawling of Hollins who died
22nd March 1792 aged 89 years
Remember me when this you see
And say when I am gone
You may go out and look about
And not find such a one
His description in the register as 'cow-doctor' presages the title of his book, published posthumously and running eventually into many editions. You can find modern print-on-demand editions of it online - his name as the author is spelt Rowlin.
