Pearson (1)

This line seems to originate in Lancashire, but most of my information is about two generations who lived near many of my other ancestors in the western Lake District.

The generations of my Pearson line are:

Probably John and Jenny PEARSON in 18th-century Lancashire

Thomas PEARSON, probably the son of John and Jenny, born about 1770 in Grizedale, Lancashire. He married (1802) Bridget HARTLEY.

Their daughter Jane PEARSON (b abt 1803 in Gosforth, Cumberland) who married Jonathan RAWLING

Further details and evidence

There is the baptism in the parish register of Satterthwaite, Lancashire (according to the IGI) on 13 January 1771 of Thomas PEARSON to John PEARSON and Jenny.

According to the 1851 census for How Hall, Ennerdale, Cumberland, my ancestor Thomas PEARSON was born about 1770 in Grisdale, Lancashire. On the modern map, Grizedale is a small village just up the valley from Satterthwaite in modern Cumbria - this is in the south Lake District area that was historically part of Lancashire. So that would be a good match for the baptism entry mentioned above.

Again in the IGI from the parish registers of Gosforth in south-west Cumberland there is the marriage of Thomas PEARSON and Bridget HARTLEY on 12 November 1802.

In the 1851 census for How Hall, Ennerdale, Thomas PEARSON appears as an 81-year-old widower, head of the household and a farmer of 338 acres. Two of his sons sons are living with him, Thomas and Isaac.

What links these snippets about Thomas PEARSON in different places at different times? The Cumbria Family History Society published in their newsletter some details from the 1852 will of one Isaac Hartley, who had lived in the parish of Gosforth. In this he mentions Thomas PEARSON of Howhall, and the children of Isaac's deceased sister Bridget PEARSON: John PEARSON, Thomas PEARSON, Isaac PEARSON, Jane RAWLIN the wife of Jonathan, Bridget JACKSON the wife of John, and Isabella. In the census, Thomas's widower status and the sons make it look pretty likely that Bridget was his wife.

Another IGI Gosforth extract is the baptism of Jane PEARSON to Thomas and Bridget on 25 September 1803. This birth is also linked to my ancestry by the 1851 census for Godferhead in the parish of Loweswater in Cumberland, which lists Jane with her husband and children, aged 47 and born in Gosforth. I don't have the marriage record of Jane to Jonathan RAWLING, but evidence such as the census and will, and her description on the birth certificate of her son as Jane RAWLING formerly PEARSON shows the link.
