Harris research notes

Page last updated 23 February 2010

This page is supplementary to the main Harris line page.

I have some early information on this line from family trees compiled by James Gorton Brooker including HARRIS (no 116), ROBINSON of Hill in Mosser (no 121) and ROBINSON of Pardshaw (no 52). I also have further information from the biographical notes to The Diary of Isaac Fletcher, ed Angus Winchester, published by the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society - Isaac Fletcher was the brother-in-law of Mary HARRIS born 1709.

8. Mary (1709-1768) who married John ROBINSON

I need to firm up Mary as an ancestor by further searches in Quaker records. THe marriage of Mary's daughter Mary ROBINSON gives only her father not her mother and I'm relying on Brooker and Winchester for the Mary HARRIS connection. So I need Mary ROBINSON's birth and Mary HARRIS's marriage to John ROBINSON in primary records. When I find the marriage record, I'm betting it gives the date as 7th day of the 12th month 1732, which I'm therefore interpreting as 7 February 1732/33. Brooker 116 gives it as February 1732 (correct, I think, but not noting that this would be 1733 under the Gregorian calendar) and Brooker 52 gives December 1732 (wrong, I think, suggesting he interpreted the date as if it were already in the Gregorian calendar - perhaps it took him until later in his work to get this straight?).

Generally I need to pursue as many of the events in this line as I can in the Quaker records.

Mary's death is in Brooker 121 and Winchester. Her residence at Underwood, Mosser, is in Winchester (I haven't noted this on the main page yet - could go back to the reference (p459) and see whether I should?). Her birth and parentage is in all three Brooker pedigrees and in Winchester.

9. William (d. bef. 1752) and Susanna (d 1751) of Greysouthen

As noted above, I think William is given as Mary's father in all three Brooker pedigrees and in Winchester. His marriage to Susanna is in the Brooker pedigrees. She is also mentioned in Winchester, but without details of the marriage. Winchester and Brooker 121 have him as of Greysouthen. Brooker 116 gives an occupation for him. The pedigree in the Society of Genealogists is damaged and only the start and finish of the occupation is visible - it says 'fla ower'. My guess is flax grower, partly because of the association with Pardshaw Moss via Underwood where Susanna was from (that fact is in Brooker 121 and Winchester).

The children, with births, deaths, residences and marriages are in Winchester. Also I've noted that their births and some marriages come from Brooker 121 and sometimes 116.

Susanna's death is in Winchester, though Brooker 121 mentions her will as a widow, so from that I infer a limit on William's death.

10. John of Greysouthen (lived in the 17th century)

I don't have birth details for William, but Brooker 116 gives John as his (and his three siblings') father, with residence at Greysouthen. Same source for deaths for William's brothers.
