Harris

Line updated 27 December 2009

I have three generations of this line, in the parish of Brigham in the north-western Lake District, Cumberland. They were (or became by about 1700) Quakers, attending the meeting house at Pardshaw Hall (more information about Pardshaw Hall and its Quakers here).

The generations of my Harris line are:

10. John HARRIS of Greysouthen (lived in the 17th century). More.

9. William (d. bef. 1752) and Susanna (d. 1751) HARRIS of Greysouthen. Susanna had been a ROGERS of Underwood More.

8. Mary HARRIS (1709-1768) who married John ROBINSON More.

10. John of Greysouthen (lived in the 17th century)

Greysouthen is in the parish of Brigham in Cumberland. I know nothing of John except where he lived and that he was the father of four children, probably all born in the late 17th century:
Mary
Thomas - died in 1735 or 36
William - see below
Joseph - died 1716/17

9. William (d. bef. 1752) and Susanna (d 1751) of Greysouthen

William would have been born in the later 17th century, perhaps about 1670, as he married in 1701/02. His bride was Susanna ROGERS of Underwood, at Mosser also in the parish of Brigham. They married on 15 January at Pardshaw Crag, indicating that they were Quakers. They had seven children who they saw grown up and married:
John 1702-1785 - married 1743 Hannah FEATHERSTON 1708-86
Jonathan 1703-89 - married 1748 Jane REAY 1709-86
Hannah 1705-95 - married 1732 John GILL b. 1704
Sarah 1707-62 - married 1739 Isaac HUDSON 1698-1745
Mary 1709-68 - married 1732/33 John ROBINSON 1708-81 see below
Jane 1713-84 - married 1734 Thomas PEARSON abt 1705 - 1785
Susanna 1718-83 - married 1743 Isaac FLETCHER 1714-81
William must have died in or before 1751 because late that year (29 January, which is late in the year in the Julian calendar) Susanna his wife made a will in which she described herself as a widow. She herself died before the beginning of 1752 on 25 March.

8. Mary (1709-1768)

Mary married John ROBINSON in 1732/33. For her married life and their children, see his line page.
