Beeby research notes

See also the BEEBY surname page.

I have one main source on the BEEBYs, the Memorandums of Mary Beeby - sister of my nearest Beeby ancestor Ann. As you can see from reading them they are largely first-hand and often contemporaneous, and they are genealogically quite thorough, so by themselves they give a pretty good picture of the BEEBYs and related families for three or four generations. Where I've stated something on the main surname page and said nothing about its source there or here, please take it that I am using these Memorandums. They were published by the Cumbria Family History Society in their newletter in 1998-1999, contributed by Bruce Walker - so on behalf of all researchers of this line I thank him and the CFHS.

6. Ann BEEBY (1786-1819)

Ann's position as wife of William WILLIAMSON of Allonby and mother of his children is documented by Quaker registers. Her death and burial is also in Quaker registers. These are also in the Williamson pedigree (number 83, Williamson of Newhall) compiled by James Gorton Brooker, which I guess is based on the same registers. The Memorandums also support and give extra detail such as the linen draper's shop.

7. Daniel (1758-1838) and Mary (1758-99)

Daniel and Mary are documented as parents of Ann by her marriage and birth in Quaker registers. I haven't found the record of their own marriage yet, but the fact that they were husband and wife, and resident in Allonby etc. is attested in later registers. So is Daniel's occupation in later life as a merchant. I have the registration of Mary's death and burial, but not Daniel's.

8. Nicholas (1710-93) and Mary (1715-1805)

Nicholas's and Mary's parentage of Daniel is from the Memorandums - I do need to get the registration of his birth and marriage. I have corresponded with another researcher, Barbara Ferguson, who reports, in at least some cases based on Quaker registers, Nicholas's birth and marriage to Mary - I need to check that up myself. Barbara also gave a birth date for their son William and his later residence; his marriage is in Quaker registers.

Nicholas's residence at Wolsty Hall is documented in the Quaker record of his son William's marriage and I have his death and burial in Quaker registers.

The birth dates of their daughters are calculated from ages at death in the Memorandums.

Other notes:

There's a possible marriage in 1698 between William WILLIAMSON and Mary BEEBY in Bromfield parish. No known connection with this lot, but she'd be at least one generation before Nicholas anyway. Look back through Quaker records as far as they go and seek to make sense of the BEEBYs. Go back to the Brooker pedigrees and see if there's anything of interest in pedigree 87 Beeby - I passed over it when I first looked but it might shed light on Mary born 1664 and/or Mary born 1673.
