Moscrop (2)

This page last updated 15 January 2010

There will have to be a full research notes page for this line, but meanwhile I'll just refer to my two sources - Jill Coulthard's excellent website here and John M Wilson, a fellow descendant of the line who commissioned some professional research which got me back to this name. I don't think he has a website I can point to, so I'll put the information up here. He's uncertain about his information so please don't take it as proven.

The generations of my Moscrop (2) line:

16. Richard (old enough to have a grandson by 1550, still alive 1559) MOSCROP of Gosforth

15. Thomas (old enough to have a son by 1550, d. between 1559 and 1565) MOSCROP

14 i. Thomas (born before 1550) and Jane MOSCROP of Gosforth. Jane had been a GIBSON.

14 ii. Richard (born before 1558) and Elizabeth MOSCROP Elizabeth had been a MAYSON.

13. William (b. later 16th century - d. by 1638) and Margaret (1574/75-1638) MOSCROP of Bankhouse, Gosforth. William was son of Thomas and Jane; Margaret was daughter of Richard and Elizabeth.

12. Thomas (1598-1668) and Dorothy MOSCROP of Bankhouse (d. after 1668).

11. Bridget MOSCROP who married John NICHOLSON.

Further details:

16. Richard (old enough to have a grandson by 1550, still alive 1559) of Gosforth

Apparently Richard MOSCROP, of Gosforth in south-west Cumberland, conveyed lands during his lifetime to his son Thomas, some time between 1559 and 1565.

15. Thomas (old enough to have a son by 1550, d. between 1559 and 1565)

Thomas definitely had a son called Richard, and probably another son also called Thomas. Thomas was born before 1550 and Richard before 1558. Both of these are ancestral to me and so both are described below.

Apparently Thomas the father died by 1565.

14 i. Thomas (born before 1550) and Jane of Gosforth

Thomas married Jane (or Johanna, presumably in Latin records) GIBSON at Gosforth on 6 September 1572. They had a son, William (date not known) and a daughter, Margaret, baptised on 12 June 1575 at Gosforth. For William see below generation 13. For Margaret, see below under generation 14 ii.

14 ii. Richard (born before 1558) and Elizabeth of Gosforth

Richard married Elizabeth MAYSON at Gosforth on 29 August 1573. Richard and Elizabeth had a son, William, baptised 27 September 1573 and a daughter, Margaret, baptised 13 February 1574/5, both at Gosforth. William lived in maturity at a place/farm called "Rackes" in Gosforth. He married (17 October 1596) Margaret MOSCROP daughter of Thomas and Jane, generation 14 i above, but they had no children and died in 1619 (William) and 1622 (Margaret). For Richard and Elizabeth's daughter Margaret, see generation 13 below.

13. William (b. later 16th century - d. by 1638) and Margaret (1574/75-1638) of Bankhouse, Gosforth

William MOSCROP and Margaret MOSCROP, first cousins, are thought to have married, probably by 1598. They lived at a place called Bankhouse in Gosforth.

It is thought that they had five children:
Thomas bapt 2 July 1598 - see below
Clement bapt 25 May 1601. Married Mary, lived at Boonwood in Gosforth and had 8 children of whom one died young and one son, John, survived him. Another was a daughter, Bridget, in 1635. Clement was buried 27 March 1665
Bridget bapt 10 March 1603/04. Later life unknown, though both Thomas and Clement named daughters after her.
William. Moved to High Prior Scale farm in the Calder Valley, parish of Beckermet St. Bridget just north of Gosforth. William died in January 1684/5 at High Prior Scale and was buried in the parish of St. Bridget. From him is descended Jill Coulthard whose website gives me most of the information on this page.
Barnard. Married Ann and had three daughters. Buried 24 December 1691 at Haile. Lived at Ennerdale and later at Dixonhill, Haile

Margaret is thought to have died, as a widow, in 1638, at High Prior Scale (residence of her son William) in St Bridget Beckermet.

12. Thomas (1598-1668) and Dorothy of Bankhouse (d. after 1668).

Thomas MOSCROP lived at Bankhouse near Gosforth in the 17th century. He had a wife called Dorothy.

His daughter Bridget MOSCROP was baptised in Gosforth on 24 April 1642 - they had 6 children in total, of whom two died young.

Thomas made a will in 1665 and died three years later - he was buried 16 April 1668. His executors were his widow and two of his daughters.

11. Bridget.

Bridget MOSCROP married John NICHOLSON in Gosforth on 22 January 1666/67. I have identified this Bridget as the 1642 daughter of Thomas MOSCROP of Bankhouse, mainly because 24 seems a likely age for her to marry - her grandmother (see above) married in her early 20s. Please note that John M. Wilson identifies the Bridget who married John NICHOLSON and is our ancestor as the Bridget baptized in 1635 to father Clement MOSCROP - she would have been 31 at marriage which is not that old but perhaps slightly less likely. But since I guess that the Clement in question was Thomas's brother, it perhaps doesn't ultimately make much difference which is the correct baptism for our Bridget.
