Jackson (1) research notes

See also the JACKSON (1) surname page.

I owe quite a bit of the information to another researcher also descended from the line, Julian Gill, who has a good website here.

4. Margaret (1852-1947) who married Jeremiah RAWLING

Margaret RAWLING formerly JACKSON, and Jeremiah RAWLING are known to be the parents of Jackson RAWLING from his GRO birth certificate. Also from a GRO certificate I have their marriage with her residence at Low Stow Bank. Julian Gill provided an notice-type record, which I guess might have been from a local paper or a family bible or similar. Margaret and Jeremiah are also recorded as husband and wife with their dates on their gravestone in Ennerdale churchyard. The age at death (and that at marriage on cert) tallies with her birth, which I also have on GRO certificate.

I should get her in 1861 and 71 censuses - I have her older brother in 1851 but none from her childhood. Also want her in 1891 and 1911 as RAWLING.

5. Joseph (1824-1890) and Mary (1830-1899) of Lamplugh

Margaret's marriage certificate indicates that she's the daughter of Joseph JACKSON, and her birth has both parents with their residence. The witnesses to the marriage include Ponsonby JACKSON (probably her older brother), Mary JACKSON (mother, sister or other?) and John JACKSON (younger brother?).

I have the GRO marriage certificate of Joseph and Mary which also confirms his residence and occupation. The later family residences are from the census (1851) and from Margaret's birth and marriage certificates (1852-74). Julian Gill also had the Low Stow Bank residence.

I have Joseph and Mary's memorial inscription, giving dates and places of death. The ages at death tie in with the births I have from Julian Gill and the IGI. The ages at marriage are also approximately matching. Similarly, I owe Julian Gill for the details of Joseph and Mary's children, though I've found for myself gravestones and memorials which confirm several points.

6. Joseph (abt 1771-1855) and Margaret (abt 1785-1875) of Eskett

The IGI baptism of Joseph in 1824 gives his parents' names - Joseph and Margrat JACKSON. Julian Gill agrees and identifies Margaret as Margaret JEFFERSON. He gave me the year of their marriage, from which I found an entry in the IGI. But I think it is worth making some independent check that Margaret JEFFERSON is the right mother. From the 1851 census I can link Margaret to her husband, their daughter Margaret and her place of birth, but by then the son Joseph has left home. Could try 1841.

The same census gives Joseph's age and birthplace which is the evidence for looking in Dean in 1771. His age at the 1851 census is given as 79 and the age on his gravestone is 81: if both accurate, he would have to be born between 31 March and 18 April 1771. If either age is wrong by one, could go nearly a year either way. But this date range and place is consistent with one possible baptism I have found on the IGI - see below.

Joseph and Margaret are commemorated together in Ennerdale churchyard, which helps with the story of the end of their lives (giving places of death) and births (giving ages at death). On the same stone are two sons (Clement and Joseph) of John and Eleanor JACKSON (John was presumably Joseph and Maragret's elder son).

Other than as noted above all my information on Joseph and Margaret's children is from Julian Gill.

7. Possibly John, 18th century

The possible baptism I have found for Joseph JACKSON is on 1 May 1771 in Dean, to John JACKSON. That would suggest John was born early to mid 18th century and lived in Dean in 1771.
