6. Robert WRIGHT (lived early 19th century) of Warton

Robert WRIGHT was a labourer. About 1830 in Warton, Lancashire (a village west of Preston), he had a daughter, Isabella.

5. Isabella WRIGHT (b abt 1830 - living 1881) of Warton and Preston, who married Thomas RIGBY

In 1853, aged about 23, Isabella had an illegitimate daughter, Fanny, in Warton.

In 1854 she was living in Preston at Miell Bank and working as a servant when she married Thomas RIGBY -on 3 December inthe parish chruch. He was her own age and a labourer, and was also living in Preston though originally from Leyland, another village in the area. It appears that by this point either Isabella or Thomas also had another daughter to bring to the union, Margaret. For their married life, see the Rigby page.

Research notes

Evidence is GRO certificates - Fanny's birth and Isabella and Thomas's marriage. Further sources used on the Rigby page.

The WRIGHT birth for Margaret is Births Q4 1853: Margaret WRIGHT, Ormskirk 8b 455 – I suppose there is technically time for a viable pregnancy between Fanny’s birth on 17 March and the end of the year, but it seems less than likely. See under Rigby for alternative matches. Could order it on a checkpoint basis for mother’s name Isabella or maybe illegitimacy.

According to census entries Isabella was born in Wharton in Lancashire. It does appear that this means Warton - the Fanny birth is probably the best confirmation, and also the proximity to Preston and Leyland. There are a couple of Whartons in eg Cheshire.
