Steel (1)

Thanks to Julian Gill for informaiton on this line.

According to the IGI, William STEEL was the father of Jane STEEL. There is a worn stone in the churchyard at Ennerdale, where Jane was baptised, in memory of William STEEL who died in 1766 aged 75. The stone is also in memory of Elizabeth, William's wife, who died in 1785. The fact that she died 20 years after him suggests she was younger, which would add plausibility to the idea that he may have had a daughter in 1746 despite being in his 50s. However, he could have been her father, grandfather, another relative, or not related.

Anyway, Jane STEEL was baptised in 1746 in Ennerdale, Cumberland. She married Lancelot SUMPTON in 1777. She died in 1803 and her gravestone (also memorialising her husband, two sons and a daughter-in-law) is (mostly) visible in Ennerdale churchyard.
