Pattinson

I've only got about a generation of this family for sure. Going back there seems to be conflicting information. They are another 19th century Cumberland farming family.

The (possible) generations of my Pattinson line are:

5? Wilson (b abt 1806) and Sarah (b abt 1807) PATTINSON of Torpenhow/Blennerhasset and Rogerscale. More.

4. John (b abt 1835) and Jane (b abt 1850) PATTINSON of Blennerhasset. Jane had been a CARRUTHERS of Dumfriesshire. More.

3. Sarah PATTINSON (1875-1935) who married Thomas Edward WILLIAMSONMore.

Further details:

5? Wilson (b abt 1806) and Sarah (b abt 1807) of Torpenhow/Blennerhasset and Rogerscale

There was an individual called Wilson PATTINSON, born 1806 in or around Aspatria, west Cumberland. He was married to Sarah who was about the same age and born Isel (from the IGI speculatively Sarah LONGHAM married William PATTINSON 28 December 1833 Isel). They had several children in various parts of west/central Cumberland:
John - born about 1834 in Isel parish - township of Blindcrake; baptised 18 January 1835, Isel
Joseph - born about 1837 in Torpenhow (the parish for Blennerhasset); baptised 9 July 1837, Torpenhow
Ann - born about 1838 in Brigham parish (Rogerscale); baptised 17 March 1839 Lorton (a chapelry of Brigham parish, near to Rogerscale)
Sarah - born about 1843 in Brigham parish (Rogerscale); baptised 28 January 1844 Lorton (a chapelry of Brigham parish, near to Rogerscale)

The family are in Blennerhasset in 1851. (Wilson is listed as a farmer of about 200 acres (which decreased as he grew older) and employing three live-in farm hands and a house servant.) Then they are in nearby Aldersceugh in 1861 and back in Blennerhasset in 1871 (by which time Sarah the mother had died, John aged 36 is listed as joint farmer with his father, and Sarah the daughter is living at home as a housekeeper aged 29, but Joseph and Ann are not present). In 1881 Wilson is living with his married daughter Ann and her family (she married Joseph FELL and they had five children) in Torpenhow.

4. John (b abt 1835) and Jane (b abt 1850) of Blennerhasset

Then we have a John PATTINSON my known ancestor. It isn't definite that he's the same John, son of William, discussed above. My ancestor John gives his birthplace as Whinfell or Torpenhow. These don't match the birthplace for John above, but they are places where Wilson and his family seem to have lived when their son John was small: Torpenhow is where the family lived when their John was up to about 3, and Whinfell is a township in the parish of Brigham, adjacent to Lorton and containing the hamlet of Rogerscale, where they lived after that. John may have forgotten where he was really born, especially if it was in his mother's parents' parish only because she went there for her confinement, and may have given as his birthplace the places where he lived with his family as a small boy. He gives his age as about the same age that John son of Wilson would be. And his marriage certificate lists his father as William - which could be an easy mis-hearing for Wilson.
I have not found any other convincing birth record for John PATTINSON about 1835, father William, in Torpenhow or Whinfell, having searched the IGI and Quaker records.

In any case, this John PATTINSON was a farmer at Blennerhasset (in 1881 farming 130 acres and employing three people), and married Janet Bell (known as Jane) CARRUTHERS on 5 December 1874 at Torpenhow. Jane was about 15 years younger than him (about 24 when they married) and was from Tundergarth in Dumfriesshire. She must have been fairly pregnant at the time as their daughter Sarah was born the following February. She also had a one-year old illegitimate son, Thomas. It isn't clear whether John was his biological father, but Thomas later appears as John's son and with the surname PATTINSON. The full listing of their children (all except Thomas born Blennerhasset) is:
Thomas 1873
Sarah 7 February 1875 - see below
Ann about 1876
Mary about 1877
Isabella about August 1880
Elizabeth about 1882
Joseph about 1884
Jane about 1888
John about 1890
William W about 1896

Jane and John lived at Blennerhasset until at least 1901.

3. Sarah (1875-1935) who married Thomas Edward WILLIAMSON

John and Jane's daughter Sarah PATTINSON (1875-1935) married Thomas Edward WILLIAMSON on 8 June 1904 in Torpenhow - see the WILLIAMSON page for their future life.
