Moscrop (1)

This page created 24 February 2008

So far, I owe everything I know about this line to Neville Ramsden, a local, highly expert and prolific genealogist. He's done sterling work with what seem to be records of questionable quality, so there's a bit of doubt about some of these dates.

John MOSCROP was born about 1645. His wife was called Jane. They lived at Wholehouse, in the hamlet of Seascale on the south-west Cumberland coast (parish of Gosforth). John died 8 June 1699, leaving a will mentioning his wife and children (Thomas, Isabell, Mary, another Daughter, Jane and Matthew).

Their son Matthew was baptised 3 September 1681. He married Esther HUNTER in neighbouring Drigg on 27 January 1710. He died on 17 March 1746. Esther survived him and died in Ennerdale in 1760.

They had a son, John MOSCROP, born (or baptised) 1 February 1711/12. He married Ann VICARS not far away in Haile on 7 February 1742/43. They lived at Scale How and then at Whinflat in the parish of Gosforth while baptising their children Matthew, Ann, Esther, Henry, Hannah (?), Sarah, John and Jane, between 1744 and 1756. John made a will in 1791 and died in 1799, at Gosforth Hall where he lived with his married daughter Jane.

John and Ann's other daughter Sarah MOSCROP (born about 1750) married Abraham COLEBANK on 27 December 1778 in Gosforth. She died in 1822.
