Briggs

John and Lydia BRIGGS were probably the parents of my ancestor Mary Ann (or Marion, Marian, etc.) BRIGGS. There's a christening entry on the IGI of Mary Ann BRIGGS christened 27 December 1822 to John and Lydia.

Mary Ann BRIGGS, spinster, of Worlingham, Suffolk, daughter of John BRIGGS, labourer, married James Martin READ in Worlingham parish church on 3 November 1841. I suppose it was the same Mary Ann.

Mary Ann later appears in the 1851 census as Marion READ, so this emphasises that there are a range of variants on this female name. It will begin Mar-, followed by -y- or -i-, then -an, -ann, -anne, -on, etc. or perhaps written as if two names Mary and Ann or Anne. If two names there may be a space or a hyphen or perhaps neither.
