How do I know they are ancestral?

They registered as the parents of Isaac ABENDANA at the Bevis Marks synagogue in east London, or at least so I infer from genealogies posted on the web.

Who were their parents?

Joseph's father was apparently Moses ABENDANA. Esther was the daughter of Isaac RODRIGUES-RIBEIRO and Yehudit PARDO - a page for them is forthcoming.

Biographical evidence

Pre-family life

The information is rather scanty and I don't know anything about them as single adults.

Family life

I'm relying for pretty much all of this on a page on the Jewish Roots website

Joseph and Esther apparently married in 1772 in the Bevis Marks synagogue, east London. Their children were spread over the next twenty years, so she at least must have been fairly young.

Their children were
Judith
Moses 1775
Isaac 1777
Rebecca 1779
Sarah 1780
Hanah 1783
Agar 1785
Raphael Haim 1789
Solomon 1792

Later life

I have no evidence for later life, or their deaths.

Legacy

I have not yet looked for wills or similar.

What became of the children?

Jewish Roots has a family for Judith - she married a Hanoch A'COHEN in 1792 (a recent widower with two sons aged about ten and eight), at Bevis Marks. They had ten children of their own.

Isaac has his own page.

On the Jewish Roots site there is a family for Sarah - she married Abraham NUNES MARTINEZ alias MARTIN in 1801, at Bevis Marks (he was her second cousin). They had a daughter. Sarah died in 1837, having been a widow about 4 years.

Raphael married Jesse ISRAEL in 1808, at Bevis Marks. They spent time in the Caribbean and had a number of children - those listed on Jewish Roots are: Joseph 1811 and Isaac 1812 (both born in Barbados, though both were later found back in London), Esther 1825, Solomon 1826, Sarah Celia 1832 (the last in Whitechapel). The gap between Isaac and Esther seems to suggest that there is a period in the family when its birth records don't survive or at least weren't available to the Jewish Roots people - perhaps they might have been in yet another part of the world, or not attending synagogue, or might have suffered an illness or other hardship that prevented live births. Jesse must have died when Sarah Celia was little, because Raphael married again in 1834, to Rachel MARTIN (NUNES MARTINEZ). Rachel was Raphael's second cousin, and double second cousin to the Abraham who married Raphael's sister Sarah above. They had a child of their own, Esther in 1837 (presumably the 1825 Esther had also died?). They lived at 3 Ton Alley, Goulston Street, until 1841, but in that year (according to a slightly cryptic note on the family page for Raphael and his first wife) someone, I guess Raphael, went to Jamaica as a 'chazan'. A chazan or hazzan is a prayer leader or cantor in the synagogue (background). Raphael died in 1862; Rachel survived him until 1880.

Solomon became an egg merchant. He married Prindla (AKA Elizabeth) ISAACS in 1817, at Bevis Marks. They had 9 children between then and 1834. Prindla must have died, because Solomon married again, to Deborah PHILLIPS in 1845 at 1 Goulston Street - a street where they later lived at two other addresses. Deborah was a widow herself and had three children from her first marriage. They had one further son, the year after they married.

I don't think I have anything on any of the others.
